The MPG Obsession America Forgot It Had: When Drivers Actually Did the Math at Every Fill-Up
Somewhere in the glove compartment of every fuel-conscious American car from the mid-1970s onward, there was often a small notebook. Sometimes it was a pocket-sized spiral pad, sometimes just folded receipts with numbers scrawled on them. The entries followed a consistent pattern: the odometer reading, the gallons pumped, and the calculated miles per gallon from the previous tank. Drivers did this by hand, with actual division, at actual gas stations, because they had decided — or been forced by circumstance — that knowing this number mattered.
That notebook is gone. So, mostly, is the habit it represented. And the story of how America went from obsessive fuel accountants to people who vaguely know their car gets "pretty good mileage" is really a story about crisis, memory, convenience, and what happens to frugal habits when the emergency that created them fades.
The Crisis That Made Everyone a Mathematician
October 1973. The Arab members of OPEC announced an oil embargo targeting the United States in response to American support for Israel during the Yom Kippur War. Within months, the price of gasoline roughly quadrupled. Lines at gas stations stretched around blocks. Some stations rationed by license plate number — odd plates on odd days, even on even. Some simply ran dry.
For a country that had built its entire postwar identity around cheap, abundant gasoline — around big engines, open highways, and the muscle car as cultural symbol — this was a genuine shock. The response was immediate and practical. Congress passed the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act in 1974, setting a national speed limit of 55 mph partly because slower speeds meant better fuel economy. The government launched public awareness campaigns. And ordinary Americans, facing a commodity that had suddenly become scarce and expensive, started paying attention to how much of it their cars consumed.
The miles-per-gallon calculation became a kitchen table topic. Automotive magazines ran detailed guides to hypermiling techniques decades before that word existed. Drivers experimented with tire pressure, acceleration habits, and highway speeds, then checked their notebooks at the next fill-up to see if the changes showed up in the numbers. It was citizen science, applied to the driveway.
The EPA Gets Involved
The federal government formalized the obsession. The Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975 created the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards — CAFE — requiring automakers to hit fleet-wide efficiency targets or face penalties. That same legislation mandated that new vehicles carry fuel economy labels, the window sticker estimates that persist today.
Those EPA ratings became a purchasing factor in a way they never had been before. Consumers cross-referenced sticker estimates the way they'd compare horsepower numbers in the muscle car years. The Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla — fuel-sippers from manufacturers that had never quite cracked the American mainstream — suddenly had a selling point that resonated viscerally with a public that had spent months waiting in gas lines.
American automakers scrambled. The big V8s that had defined domestic cars through the 1960s gave way, often painfully, to smaller engines, downsized bodies, and fuel-injection systems that promised efficiency. Some of the early attempts were awkward — underpowered cars with rough manners and questionable reliability — but the direction was clear. MPG was now a metric that sold cars.
The Notebook Generation
The people who came of driving age in the late 1970s and through the 1980s absorbed this culture directly. They learned to drive in an era when efficiency was discussed, tracked, and compared. They knew approximately what their car should return on the highway versus city driving. They noticed when the numbers dropped — a sign of a developing mechanical issue, a change in driving conditions, or a bad batch of fuel — because they were tracking them.
This wasn't purely environmental consciousness, though that was a component for some. It was economics, plain and simple. Gas had been cheap enough to ignore; now it wasn't. Paying attention to fuel consumption was the same rational behavior as watching your electric bill or tracking grocery prices. The car was a running expense, and the MPG number was a direct input into that expense.
Glove compartment notebooks. Odometer resets at every fill-up. Mental arithmetic while the pump ran. These were the habits of an era that understood, from lived experience, that energy wasn't free.
How We Lost the Thread
Gas prices stabilized and eventually fell through much of the 1980s. The lines disappeared. The emergency passed. And with it, gradually, went the urgency that had made fuel economy a daily preoccupation.
The SUV boom of the 1990s is the clearest evidence of how completely the crisis memory faded. Americans who had watched their parents idle in gas lines turned around and purchased the least fuel-efficient passenger vehicles the market offered, in enormous numbers, during a period of relatively cheap fuel. The Ford Explorer and Chevrolet Suburban became the dominant family vehicles of the decade. Nobody was keeping notebooks.
Technology completed the disconnection. Modern vehicles display real-time fuel economy on the instrument cluster — not a number you calculate, but one the car calculates for you, continuously, without any effort on your part. Trip computers track average MPG across any interval you choose. Range estimates tell you exactly how far you can go before needing to stop.
The information is more accurate and more accessible than anything the notebook generation had. And yet the relationship to that information is completely different. When you calculate a number yourself, you own it. When a screen hands it to you, it's just another notification.
The Number Nobody Checks
Surveys of American drivers consistently find that a majority can't accurately state their vehicle's fuel economy, even in an era when that number is displayed constantly. The information exists; the habit of caring about it doesn't. Fuel has remained a significant household expense — the average American family spends several thousand dollars annually on gasoline — but it's treated more like a utility bill, an unavoidable fixed cost, than a variable that behavior can meaningfully affect.
Electric vehicles are beginning to create a new version of the old obsession, with range anxiety producing the kind of careful consumption monitoring that MPG tracking used to generate. EV drivers check charge levels with a focus that mirrors the notebook habit — because the stakes of getting it wrong feel immediate in a way that running a tank low on a car with gas stations every few miles doesn't.
Maybe the habit never really died. Maybe it just needed a new reason to surface. The 1973 generation didn't start tracking MPG because they were virtuous. They did it because circumstances made the number matter. When the number matters again — as fuel costs spike, as range becomes a genuine planning factor — the notebooks have a way of coming back out.
